Barcamper - A tour in search of ideas
Like Idol -- but for business ideas. In spring 2016, Barcamper had a motorhome tour in Skåne to find the brilliant ideas that had not reached the startup scene. During the trip, over 80 meetings were booked and 40 entrepreneurs have been helped to realize their business dreams.
In Barcamper, it is the new knowledge and doors that open during the journey that are the real profit for the entrepreneurs. It is ultimately about giving good ideas access to international networks and capital to reach a global market. It is also a matter of moving where the entrepreneurs are instead of having the ideas come to the incubator.
That's why The Creative Plot started Barcamper. During parts of the tour they worked closely together with Future by Lund and Ideon Innovation. In spring 2016, the rolling motorhome office started the collection of creative ideas with a visit to Veberöd and then continued to five more Scanian resorts. The idea was to lower the threshold so that innovators would more easily step into the motorhome and present their ideas. Many also chose to join because it felt undemanding and the informal concept proved especially appealing to women.
The focus of the tour was cultural and creative industries, from photography, design, architecture and theatre to tourism and sports. After the six-day tour of 80 scouted business ideas, half of the entrepreneurs went ahead and received coaching as well as meetings with international investors. In the next stage, 20 of the participants were given an accelerator week that dealt with financing, budget and sales, among other things. Eleven entrepreneurs went to the final and learned more about presentation, building their team and crowdfunding — and in the end Caroline von Post stood with Stormie Poodle as the winner.
After that, many business ideas have become companies that have taken great strides forward. Some early examples include the company “I am runbox”, which managed to raise over SEK 2.5 million in two crowdfunding campaigns. Stormie Poodle changed the business idea from a bathrobe to a whole collection of recycled materials. The Health Company of the Year has changed its digital platform and adapted from a national to an international market. The young guys of Vultus, who want to revolutionize agriculture with the help of drones, have moved into premises at Ideon Innovation. Organisers The Creative Plot have even after Barcamper contact and feedback with the contractors.
Barcamper started in Italy in 2012 through the company DPixel and has evaluated 1,800 business ideas and invested 125 million, resulting in 50 companies and 300 new jobs. Barcamper is funded by the Swedish Agency for Growth, Region Skåne and Lund Municipality, and The Creative Plot at Ideon Innovation is responsible for the practical implementation in cooperation with dPixel in Milan.
