Lund Municipality: 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030
In 2022, Lund was named one of the EU's 100 climate-neutral cities. With this decision, Lund will be supported, promoted and presented as an example of how we can work towards becoming a climate-neutral city.
The EU aims to achieve 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030. These cities will be the forerunners of other European cities that will in turn be climate-neutral by 2050. The EU hopes that the selected cities will be bold and creative, focusing in particular on the climate challenges that exist in urban planning, transport and energy. The work has been ongoing for some time in Lund, but will now be reinforced by the EU's decision.
The EU's objective is to involve local authorities, citizens, businesses, investors, as well as regional and national authorities in the project. The 100 cities will become innovation hubs. The initiative is linked to the Swedish work on climate contracts for cities, Lund has been involved through the strategic innovation programme Viable Cities since 2019.
The mission for climate-neutral and smart cities “Cities Mission” is one of five EU missions, and is a novelty in Horizon Europe's research and innovation programme for the years 2021-2027. In total, Horizon Europe will invest €360 million over the period 2021-23. The Commission will work to help mobilise additional funding from public and private sources.
