VA SOUTH: Together we make room for the water

How does society become more resilient and robust when it comes to torrential rain? VA SYD is investigating in the initiative Together we make room for the water how through collaboration we can improve the management of downpours in Malmö and Lund. The project also looks at increasing the reuse of water.

VA SYD work on long-term climate adaptation of the wiring network, for example by maintaining and renewing wiring. That work also includes building separate conduits for the stormwater and building open dams to delay and purify the stormwater. In close cooperation with residents, property owners and planners in Malmö and Lund municipalities, VASYD works to reduce the risks of flooding after torrential rains.

The venture Together we make room for the water started in Malmö in 2017 and Lund in 2020. With this, there is the opportunity to make additional efforts that require resources beyond what is available in daily work, and VA Syd can test new working methods, drive new collaborations and involve more actors than is usually done.

Part of the work is to get villa and townhouse owners to harvest the rainwater by diverting the water from downpipes directly into the garden or into a water barrel. In this way, the water will benefit the garden while reducing the pressure on the mains. As a Malmö or Lund resident, it is even possible to receive compensation for disconnecting their downpipes from the mains

VA SYD is a regional VA organisation operating in Burlöv, Eslöv, Lomma, Lund and Malmö.

The venture is ongoing until further notice.
