IoT and mobility are a broad field. Future by Lund's portfolio focuses on building knowledge and insight from mobility data and how to measure, use and visualize this as a base for decision making. At the same time, areas related to vehicles and, for example, interaction between vehicles and infrastructure are also being investigated.

Elaborator, sub-project: Traffic status at Mårtenstorget

In the large European mobility project Elaborator, Lund is working on how to design sustainable mobility in a city. In order to do this, it is important to know what the current situation looks like and to be able to measure how the actions taken affect the situation. Therefore, Future by Lund is now testing the technology by seeing how to measure traffic and parking at Mårtenstorget in Lund using sensors.

SOM II, sub-project: Finding parking spaces with sensors

In the autumn of 2020, a project was started in the parking house Färgaren in Lund, in which some of the parking spaces were connected using sensors. The sensors measured whether the parking space was vacant or not and then reported further. In the future, this could give those looking for parking real-time information about available parking spaces in apps or on websites.

FLOW, sub-project: New technology to measure flows of travellers is tested in Lund

In the FLOW and LOSC development projects, Future by Lund works together with partners to investigate how new technologies can be used to measure traffic flows, for example. Lund's new district Brunnshög has a strong environmental profile and the ambition is that no more than a third of passenger transport to the area will be by car - so it is particularly interesting to test new technologies that can capture traffic flows in the area. Now MeltSpot, Trivector Traffic, Lund Municipality and Future by Lund measure where travellers get off and on the tram that services the area.

Elaborator: Lund one of 12 European cities in an EU sustainable mobility project

How can sustainable urban mobility be designed in a way that is also inclusive, safe and affordable? This is what partners from all over Europe are working on in the Horizon project ELABORATOR, which started with a conference in Athens in early June 2023. The work being done will also benefit the emergence of climate-neutral cities. Lund is one of twelve cities participating in the work, and Lund company Sensative's IoT platform Yggio will be the main platform for all sub-projects within Elaborator.

FLOW, sub-project: Innovation project measures Brunnshögstrafiken

How will we use new sensors to be able to measure and plan traffic in a way that facilitates urban planning? This will be tested in Lund's new Brunnshög district. In the spring of 2023, a station with sensors has been fitted at the roundabout south of the site. There, sensors from AXIS Communications will measure speeds and the number of passing vehicles in different categories. The site is the first of a total of six measuring points planned for Brunnshög in the FLOW innovation project.

FLOW, sub-project: LED lighting facilitates measurement with sensors

The municipality of Lund is working on replacing lighting with LED luminaires. The new technology significantly reduces environmental impact and energy consumption, but also provides completely new possibilities for connecting sensors. But how will it be done? What is good to measure and in which places is it best suited? It is hoped that the participants in the FLOW and LOSC projects will be able to investigate and test it in Veberöd.

Innovation Skåne: The connected green society in Danish-Swedish project

The InnoTech Task Force project is a Danish-Swedish project that will investigate how digital technology and data can be used to make a green transition. Among others, Innovation Skåne and the municipalities of Tomelilla and Ängelholm are participating in the project from Sweden.

FLOW: Now public transport runs through digital Veberöd!

One way to plan for future traffic flows can be to simulate in a digital model. For some years now, Veberöd has had a digital twin, that is, a 3D model of the village in which pieces of reality are reflected. The model already contains metrics from various deployed sensors, and several of them have to do with traffic. Now there are also moving objects in the model. When the real buses of the public transport are on their way through the village, they also run in the digital model at the same time.

LOSC - Large project connecting traffic flows is carried out in Lund

Lund Municipality is granted SEK 5.9 million from Vinnova to implement the project Lund Open Sensing City. Lund Open Sensing City will create an open test bed for the future real-time controlled society where people, organizations, infrastructure and sensor systems work together to create a sustainable environment with high quality of life.

ASIN: Smart solutions for public environments

The Smart Public Environments I (SOM I) project was a preliminary study of how to strengthen the ability of Lund and Malmö municipalities to use innovative IoT solutions to develop and streamline public environments. The goal was also to investigate how to create a testing arena for the Swedish IoT industry. The work of measuring flows of people and vehicles around Lund Central Station and personalised lighting at a nursing home in Malmö were used as two experiments, mainly in the tank, to prepare the organisations for the work with the new technology.

SOM II: Smart Public Environments

Imagine if the bin could tell you when it's full, if you could sit at home and see if the vegetables in the grow plot need watering, or if city planners could easily follow which paths cyclists prefer. This and much more was investigated in Smart Public Environments II (SOM II) through connected sensors in a free and open network in Lund and Malmö. The project aimed to find the benefits of new smart technologies in municipal operations and public environments and to implement innovative solutions to the challenges that exist. Another goal was to find opportunities to test entrepreneurs and companies' innovative solutions to public operations. Within the project, more than twenty sub-projects were carried out and a new agile project implementation model was tested with very good results.

FLOW brings new knowledge about connected traffic

In order to be able to plan, expand and manage society, data is needed, among other things, on which roads different road users choose. The same data, if it could be reported in real time, could make it easier for road users to choose the fastest route and provide the municipality with quick information on traffic problems. The FLOW project will explore how to collect data using sensor technology and then connect the data on a digital platform.

LOSC/FLOW, sub-project: How does street design affect vehicle speed?

How can we take advantage of new technologies to better understand where roads should be built and how they should be designed? This is explored in the LOSC project, for example by Smarta Byar testing a radar that measures speed along Dörrödsvägen in Veberöd. In this way, traffic flow can be measured continuously over a long period of time. The radar captures movements at 180 degrees and can tell the difference between pedestrians or vehicles passing by. The experiments are carried out in collaboration with Smart Villages, among others, to create a basis for future traffic decisions.

LOSC/FLOW, sub-project: Sensors count the road users to Brunnshög

When Brunnshög is planned and built, the idea of sustainability is important — and this must, among other things, be noticed on the traffic. The idea is that journeys to and from the area will consist of at least one third of walking and cycling trips and at least one third by public transport, while it should be no more than one third by car. Now this is to be measured — and several companies in Lund are now collaborating in an innovation project to find common solutions on how to measure effectively.

SOM II, sub-project: 3D model of smart village

Through a 3D model of a community, residents would be able to report faults to the local authority, look at houses to be built and see how the water flows in the pipes under the street. Perhaps they could also take a step into the model and play games or have meetings with people for cultural exchange. Smart Villages in Veberöd started a visualisation project in 2019 as part of the SOM project. The work showed great opportunities and in 2021, Smarta Byar offers several higher education institutions to use the village of Veberöd and the digital twin in their teaching — something that can give the village knowledge about how to increase sustainability through sensors.

SOM II, sub-project: Travel habits - data integration

In autumn 2020, volunteer Lunds could participate in a new survey on travel habits. It was Trivector and Future by Lund who again collected data through the TravelVu app. There were several purposes for the investigation. One was to understand how to travel in the new district of Brunnshög, one was to follow up on the municipality's objectives, one was to be able to design the transport system to meet the needs of travellers. Finally, they also wanted to compare how the data from the TravelVu app is consistent with the traditional point measurement.

AFRY: Self-driving vehicles start journey towards a smart city

Transport in the smart city is the topic of a feasibility study conducted by our partner AFRY project manager in Hässleholm. The task is to find ways to transport goods in autonomous vehicles on ordinary streets in an urban environment. To make this possible, the focus will be on creating a digital infrastructure that covers the entire logistics value chain. One vision for the work is to show how the smart city can create sustainable solutions with higher efficiency, increased accessibility and hopefully also greater profits.

LOSC/FLOW, sub-project: Lund tests smart technology for better anti-slip

When there is a winter road race in Lund, the Service Administration must be prepared and go out and combat slipping on roads as well as pedestrian and bicycle lanes. Decisions about when it is time have previously been based on data from three weather stations. In an innovation project, data from many different sources will be merged to provide a much more detailed picture of the slip state, which can provide both safer and cheaper anti-slip protection in the future. At the same time, this is an attempt to test how a smart city platform can provide the municipality with a better basis for decision-making.

LOSC/Flow, sub-project: Innovation projects measure traffic

How to use sensors to measure traffic? Partners within Future by Lund have tried this in several innovation projects in recent years. In a project in Södra Sandby, we are testing combining data from AFRYS image sensors, Trivector's app TravelVu and Acconeer's radar sensor with, for example, weather data from SMHI. In this way, we hope to create a more comprehensive and at the same time more cost-effective factual basis for traffic planners. Watch the video that shows how we work in the test project!

Trivector: Finding Hidden Cycle Potentials

Lund is a city where many people already use bicycles for their daily transportation. As the city grows, it is important for Lund to work to ensure that the population continues to choose the bicycle. To increase the number of cycle journeys, knowledge of how cyclists use the cycle network is needed, and in the project “Finding hidden cycling potentials” the journeys will be examined using an app.

Diginfra: Power gathering for the transport of the future

The municipality of Lund and Future by Lund participate in the project DigiNFRA, which is about creating cooperation between cities, authorities and other important actors when it comes to the digital infrastructure for the future transport system. The project is led by the strategic innovation programme Drive Sweden and, in addition to Lund, the Swedish Transport Administration and the municipalities of Gothenburg, Linköping and Stockholm are also involved. SOM II, Sub-project: Monitoring of charging points

On an unusually beautiful day in early October 2020, some of the participants in the SOM project met at Mårtenstorget in Lund to connect modules with radar sensors at two of the charging points for electric cars. With this, it is possible to determine remotely whether the parking space is occupied by a car parked without charging.

SOM II, sub-project: Smart cycling data provides completely new knowledge for traffic planners

Which route do Lund's cyclists choose and do they think their bike path feels safe? In September 2018, nearly 500 Lund cyclists participated in a project where new technology created a better basis for both traffic planning and research. The results were shown at the International Transport Conference in Copenhagen.

SOM II, sub-project: Bicycle tracking and theft protection

When Jan Malmgren in Veberöd was hanging out with friends, suddenly something rang in his mobile phone. The cell phone showed that his bike had started to move and had been stolen. What the thieves did not know was that the bike was equipped with a sensor that alerts if the bike was moved and that it also sent real-time updates about the bike's location.

After the first cycle project, the quality of the data was analyzed by Malmö University. The Technical Administration in Lund also took a closer look at places perceived as unsafe by cyclists.

SOM II, sub-project: Visualization of data

In a smart city, a lot of data can be collected — but if you can't find good ways to display the data, it becomes difficult to get an overview. Data from the smart bike project carried out in autumn 2018 was used in a sub-project to demonstrate how to visualise the data set, for example to support decision makers.

TravelVu - the app that detects trips

The fact that most people have a mobile phone with GPS can actually make our travel habits both environmentally friendly and healthier. The TravelVu app changes travel surveys to make them easier to do, while making the results both more accurate and more detailed.

EC2B is a new concept for sustainable mobility as an integral part of the accommodation. This means a mix of mobility services, brought together in an integrated offer that is made easily accessible through the property where one lives or works.
