Lund Municipality in new major climate cooperation

Lund was recently ranked as Sweden's most environmentally friendly municipality in 2023 by the magazine Aktuell Sustainability. The municipality of Lund has previously worked with Climate Neutral Lund 2030, and is now strengthening climate work through the project CoAction Lund. The project aims to make Lund climate-neutral by 2030, and this will be made possible through increased collaboration between universities, companies, municipalities, citizens, associations and other actors in Lund. This week it was announced that Vinnova, Sweden's innovation authority, has granted CoAction Lund one million kronor. Lund has thus been appointed one of two pilots in Sweden (the other being Stockholm). This means that the work done in Lund will be followed by researchers and many other cities and presented as an international example.
More than 25 actors are involved: major employers, property owners, government agencies, energy suppliers, the university and solution actors in addition to the municipality. The project mainly involves players in the innovation trail around Brunnshög, Ideon and Medicon Village, but also Tetra Pak and Alfa Laval with facilities in other parts of Lund. The initiative focuses on energy and mobility, as passenger transport accounts for the majority of emissions in Lund and a robust energy system is seen as an absolute necessity for achieving climate neutrality.
The district around Brunnshög, Ideon and Medicon Village is one of Sweden's most workplace-dense areas with a lot of traffic. In order for the area to grow and continue to be an attractive place for future employees and companies, joint measures are needed that reduce car driving and encourage more people to choose the tram or bicycle. The solution to this can be increased collaboration and joint solutions, such as energy communities, shared parking spaces, promotions and employee benefit pots. Lund's problem is not unique — and therefore it is important that the solutions developed can also be disseminated to others.
In addition to mobility solutions, a more flexible and “internetised” energy system will be developed within CoAction Lund. The share of locally produced and stored renewable energy will increase — something that is needed for Lund to achieve its climate goals and avoid power shortages in the future.
