Elaborator: Lund one of 12 European cities in an EU sustainable mobility project

How can sustainable urban mobility be designed in a way that is also inclusive, safe and affordable? This is what partners from all over Europe are working on in the Horizon project ELABORATOR, which started with a conference in Athens in early June 2023. The work being done will also benefit the emergence of climate-neutral cities. Lund is one of twelve cities participating in the work, and Lund company Sensative's IoT platform Yggio will be the main platform for all sub-projects within Elaborator.

The EU ELABORATOR project is an initiative funded by EU programme Horizon to design inclusive, safe, affordable and sustainable mobility in cities. The consortium is a multidisciplinary group of 38 partners contributing their varied expertise on the subject and working together to implement sustainable urban mobility to benefit climate-neutral cities. ELABORATOR stands for The European Living Lab on designing sustainable urban mobility towards climate neutral cities.

- Globally, urban areas consume over 65% of the world's energy and account for more than 70% of CO2 emissions. It is therefore essential that cities act as ecosystems of experimentation and innovation to help everyone else in their transition to becoming climate-neutral by 2050. The Elaborator project will support cities in the transition to climate neutrality by promoting emissions-free, shared, active and human-centered mobility,” said Dr. Angelos Amditis, project manager of Elaborator in the project's press release.

The start-up meeting in Athens provided an opportunity for everyone to listen to the work package leaders and hear more about the action points of the Lighthouse cities and successor cities during the project. There was also a workshop on the discovery and definition phases of the Elaborator method, which marked the first step towards understanding how our cities perceive their mobility challenges, their different user needs and what relevant interventions have been created together in the past.

The work will have three main objectives:

1) to collect, assess and analyse users' needs and requirements for safe and inclusive mobility and climate-neutral cities;

2) To collect and share comprehensive data sets - consisting of real-world data, traces from specific toolboxes, and user and stakeholder opinions - between cities, to increase the uptake of innovations.

3) To develop detailed guidelines, policies, future roadmaps and built capacity for service providers and planning tools for urban planners to optimally integrate inclusive and secure mobility efforts into sustainable urban mobility plans.

The efforts will be demonstrated in Lund and 11 other cities in Europe: Milan, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Issy-les-Moulineaux (Paris), Zaragoza (Spain), Trikala, (Greece), Liberec, (Czech Republic) Velenje, (Slovenia), Split (Croatia), Krusevac (Serbia) and Ioannina (Greece).

During the meeting, Lund presented some planned efforts that the city can make within the project.

- We have been working with sensors to understand mobility in the city for several years and we want to further develop this in Elaborator, says Anders Trana, Future by Lund. We also see an opportunity to look at safety solutions linked to tramway crossings and to convert car routes into summer cycle routes. We look forward to cooperation, partly with our Nordic neighbours who often have similar challenges, and with other cities in Europe where we can find new solutions that we may not have thought of at all. It is also an exciting opportunity for Sensative to demonstrate the IoT platform Yggio, which we in Lund have worked extensively with in the projects SOM, LOSC and FLOW.

Sensativas IoT platform Yggio will be further developed in the project and serve as a standardized data space to be used to share data both within each city, but above all also between the different cities within the Elaborator.

- We have been given a very central role in the Elaborator project, which allows us to further develop the platform's capabilities to enable the city to easily and securely share data with different actors within its own city as well as with other cities. This is important for collaboration within Elaborator, and it will be important digital collaboration features for tomorrow's smart cities. In addition, we act as Lund's technology partner and will enable Lund to benefit from all the innovations developed in all the other eleven cities,” says Mats Pettersson, Sensative.
