Creative animators bring abandoned buildings to life

Published

In many cities there are abandoned older buildings that are important for a place's identity and cultural heritage and at the same time there is a need for premises for new activities. To start an idea of what these properties could be used for, images projected onto the building can be an impactful method — something Future by Lund's partner Anibar showed when they used animation as a way to visualize new content in a former hotel. This is an example of how Future by Lund can also work with the combination of new technologies together with cultural and creative industries, an exciting area with great potential.

Birgitta Persson is through her work with the European Cultural Organization Trans Europe Halles well familiar with the trend of using older real estate for something completely new.

- In the 1980s, an alternative cultural movement began to emerge for those activities that did not fit in the usual cultural houses or institutions, she says. Then they looked for abandoned premises in the urban landscape. In the last 20 years, it has been incredibly popular to ennoble old industrial properties, and many municipalities would like to have the cool premises as a place for various types of cultural activities. But often it is not so easy to operate them purely commercially. Therefore, it is very helpful to have a clear idea from the very beginning of what the premises could become and who it is that should be there.

During the animation festival in Kosovo, a prototype was created for a tool to start such a process. Working in Kosovo Lund University and Future by Lund together with the cultural association Anibar and UN Habitat Exploring the Possible areas of innovation in Kosovo. In the summer of 2024, Anibar hosted an animation festival in Peja. When Anibar had animators bring to life an old hotel in the city using animation projected on the house, it was very effective and this gave the audience a good starting point to think about the new uses of the building.

- For us, it is especially interesting to observe how the creative cultural competences approach a problem area and can be involved in creating a future commitment to these properties, says Charlotte Lorentz Hjorth. The UN through UN Habitat has been good at documenting properties in the area and ensuring that some of them are renovated, but often the challenge remains of knowing what the properties will be used for, who will be there and how to create dynamics, activities and content. When animating on a wall of a property, this can bring to life for the audience what it might feel like when the property has found its new pulse and its new energy. The way of animating on real estate becomes a tool to engage people in a future development of the building.

In an extension, this tool would be something for Lund to use.

- We could maybe do this in conjunction with the greenhouses that we are thinking of as a common area in Lund Innovation District. How can greenhouses become a hub for innovation in Lund between the new and old cities and between intersecting innovation areas? An animation can create a feeling and an understanding of what the possibilities are.

Future by Lund works on the basis of a portfolio mindset to transform an entire area together with several actors instead of stopping at what is happening in a single project. Innovation portfolios are created in different ways — this may be changes in legislation, new technological opportunities or the desire to solve a societal challenge. Portfolio work is a good fit for bringing the qualities of Cultural and Creative Sectors and Industries (KKSNs) into innovation work where they can make a difference in a new way.

- An incubator supports individual companies that often need to have much of their business in place before they can enjoy the full benefits of the incubator, and often entrepreneurs within KKSN have not made it that far on their own, says Charlotte Lorentz Hjorth. Future by Lund works with a portfolio methodology where we move entire areas with the help of several actors and this is a good fit for actors in creative industries. Those working with KKSN need to build network-based relationships and to work with other competencies to enter innovation environments.

Future by Lund works in a similar way, for example, by combining archaeology with new techniques in the portfolio Archeología y tecnologia immersivo and with digital personalized concert experiences in Personalized digital concerts.
