Future by Lund models provide inspiration in Europe

Published

Future by Lund has served as an innovation platform for over ten years and over the years, a collection of tools, methods and models has become a basic philosophy and an explanation of how Future by Lund works. By serially connecting the different tools, we have, in collaboration with researchers at Lund University, created a model for how to understand the movement of ecosystems and how to tackle challenges in the form of portfolios. The fact that Future by Lund has serially connected several tools is not only practical for us — nowadays the logic is also used in several of the international partnerships and projects that we have become a part of. Now you can find our models, methods and tools collected on the website!

Future by Lund is an actor working in the gap between organisations and in areas where usually none of the actors has its own mandate for implementation. When you want to get many partners and organizations to collaborate, it is good to have an explanatory model and plan for how to do it.

- The fact that Future by Lund has models for collaboration between many parties is due to the fact that it is difficult to collaborate with innovations between organizations. This is like having a protocol and rules of the game for collaboration, which tells us how we co-create, create and develop and when organizations can pick up results and say that it is their property,” says Future by Lund CEO Charlotte Lorentz Hjorth.

In order to create an environment where many parties can work together, Future by Lund works with the zone model, a variant of the OECD/OPSI portfolio tool, data mining tools and Vinnova's layer model. The models and tools have been merged into a whole called LIEPT (Lund Innovation Ecosystem Portfolio Tracking). More about this can be found in our method tab.

- These models guide us in our innovation work and are important for us to understand the strengths of different innovation portfolios. LIEPT brings together opportunities and challenges into a whole and visualises these as an innovation area and a portfolio so that we can determine its attractiveness, what partnerships are required, what events lead to development, and what attractiveness and investment willingness the portfolio arouses.

Thus, Future by Lund has not invented all models themselves, but often uses proven models as a starting point.

- Our models are not unique, but we have created an understanding of what they can help us with. We have made them “ours” and can explain them to others, continues Charlotte Lorentz Hjorth. It is good to share tools with others, because it makes it easier to have a common understanding when collaborating. Then we've created our own logic and apply the models to ourselves to make them functional. The important thing is to have a collection of different innovation methods that support different things in different parts of the process.

The models are therefore not only a support in Future by Lund's work as an innovation platform, but have also been included as a basis in several of the projects in which Future by Lund participates, for example the European projects IPA and team, and the portfolio logic is featured in Biotech Heights but also in Lund Municipality's projects CoPilot.

- We see that the models are needed so that we can work together efficiently and quickly, otherwise it will be too long to start before landing in a common working model in a partnership. When we have presented our series-connected models in partnership in Europe, it is not usual to do this, but the parts in the form of the methods and tools are often recognized. The fact that we have done a lot that can be the basis for collaboration makes it easier in our international partnerships. Our logic becomes something that you are happy to adhere to, because it is an investment of several years to develop such a chain of models. The groundwork we have done allows one to get into functionality faster and that is attractive in many projects. At the same time, there are many project applications that require an implementation logic already in the application. Of course, it is also attractive that our innovation model is also elaborated and verified by researchers and not least developed together with researchers,” concludes Charlotte Lorentz Hjorth.

Future by Lund operates in the space between organisations and in areas where none of the actors has its own mandate for implementation. It is helpful to have an explanatory model and a plan for how to proceed when trying to get many partners and organisations to collaborate.

- La razón de futuro por Lund ha modelos para collaboración entre muchos partidos es que é difficile para collaborar en innovaciones entre organizaciones. It's like having a protocol and rules for collaboration, indicating how we co-create, innovate, and develop, and when organizations can take the results home and claim them as their property,” explains Future by Lund CEO, Charlotte Lorentz Hjorth.
