Hedda Andersson: Upper secondary school as a test bed for societal challenges

Hedda Anderssongymnasiet is Lund's fifth upper secondary school and started operations in autumn 2018. The school has an entrepreneurial profile and, together with Future by Lund, investigates whether it is possible to find innovative working methods that suit the needs of both the school, the city and external partners.

Hedda Andersson Gymnasium started his business through six classes, three in economics and three in engineering. With the school being built in stages over time, the 180 students will be expanded to 2,000 spread over several programmes. Students follow the curriculum of their respective programs, of course, but are also schooled in using entrepreneurial processes and to work together across program boundaries. The business started in premises at Svaneskolan.

“Hedda wants to have a strong connection and connection to the community,” says the school Principal Malin Dahlberg. For the autumn, we have a clear vision that the young people who come here will be able to participate in the development of society through their schooling. We will empower them, give them knowledge and give them the tools they need to help them solve the challenges of the future right now.

Hedda Andersson School started a project together with Future by Lund.

“If we are to meet the challenges of the future, we must include young people and build new solutions together,” says Katarina Scott at Future by Lund. Similar concepts and working methods are established nationally and internationally and use different cross-functional approaches, knowledge areas and entrepreneurial processes linked to societal challenges. Together we have a goal to build something new and also investigate what is needed to create this. We are also interested in Makers both as a movement and workshop.

The aim of the project is to create a common working method on a surface between the school and the innovation platform.

“Schools work to meet teaching objectives, curriculum, support students and manage classes, schedule and teaching, while companies and administrations have their logic and needs,” says Katarina Scott. These do not match each other very well straight off, and therefore there are few deep collaborations between school and business/administrations. It's this bit we want to find solutions for in the test bed together — and when we solve it, we can accomplish a lot. Hedda High School has economics and technology programs and is an optimal platform for those very issues. Heddagymnasiet has thoughts on new types of teaching modules and the next step is to investigate how companies and administrations can model questions to suit young people and schools.

At Hedda Anderssongymnasiet, the principal and other staff are focused on creating collaborations, both between the programs and between the school and the rest of the community.

“We will build internal collaborations that allow students to see the contexts right now and give them clear tools so that they can use them consciously. I believe very much in context and that genuine knowledge leads to new ways of acting. We need to create the conditions for this and the school must be a place where you can contribute,” says Malin Dahlgren.

For Future by Lund's partners, there is now an opportunity to discuss how Hedda Andersson High School could be used as a test bed. Contact persons are Lars Mattiasson and Catherine Scott.
