“The portfolios make us playable for collaborations”

IN ENGLISH BELOW
Within Future by Lund's theme areas Creatives & Changemakers, Future Living & Spaces, Digital Cities & Citizens, Moving Things & People and Ideas & Science for Society, the work is organised in portfolios. This is an approach used to shift or transform the growth areas of the ecosystem. Portfolios are available in all thematic areas and they can be found under Portfolios tab on the website.
To give an example of how portfolios can be built, we look at the work that Charlotte Lorentz Hjorth and Lund University have done in the theme area Creatives & Changemakers. In this thematic area we cooperate Lund University and Future by Lund in all portfolios. (Charlotte Lorentz Hjorth works at Lund University's Collaboration Department and is also CEO of Future by Lund).
- Lund University identifies the trend that Europe is investing in support of cultural and creative sectors and industries (CCSs) in order to develop these industries, but also to get them involved in driving development and innovation. KKSN is relevant to all nine faculties at Lund University, and can be used as a bridge to collaboration between the university's departments.
It therefore became natural to work on building cross-cutting innovation areas and portfolios, where two or more areas are linked together to create something new. To initiate possible portfolios, Charlotte conducted about 40 interviews with people at various faculties.
- Through the interviews, 25 cross-cutting areas were identified. There were a large number of opportunities and it is possible to collect many portfolios, but it is also important to find strength, both in parts and in collaboration with partners internationally and the local innovation ecosystem, so that the work is not solely driven from within Lund University. To be part of the major partnerships in Europe, both inside and outside the university need to work together. Following the inventory of possible innovation areas, the steering group selected six portfolios to start with.
Lund University has a great advantage by being a broad university with nine faculties, but it can also be a challenge.
- At Lund University we have so much that it can make it complicated to see what it is that we should position ourselves with in Europe. The fact that we have chosen these portfolios to begin with is that we have found areas that Europe has highlighted while seeing that we have potential in this area. Then there are other areas where the research is very strong in itself and this work stands on its own. We have chosen to look at the transverse areas where two surfaces can be joined to give birth to a new and very exciting innovation space and portfolio.
What benefits do you see in retrospect?
- The benefit that this has brought is that we have linked up with Europe and explained what we want to work on. We are ready, we can invite partnerships and are playable for collaborations by having already raked together exciting portfolios. I see that it has now become easier to seek funds from the European aid system and at the same time to invite relevant partners to cooperate.
The six initial portfolios are thus born from the interviews and then selected on the basis of collaborations and potential for international partnerships and with the help of Lund University's steering group. This is how they were created:
Archaeology and new technologies (the portfolio is called Archeology and immersive tech) is a strong area for Lund University, which can be seen, among other things, by the fact that the area has received extensive European funding. When the faculties were interviewed, it turned out that, as it became more difficult to do excavations during the pandemic, the archaeologists had begun to devote their resources to more digital solutions. They then developed different techniques — such as scanning areas and digitizing the excavations and collections — that allowed them to continue working. This work has attracted interest in Europe.
Archeología y tecnologia immersivo: Just as digital technology profoundly affects our daily lives, it is also revolutionizing archaeology. The introduction of 3D models to make digital copies of artifacts, archaeological sites and monuments has increased the accessibility of archaeological research, and given archaeologists new tools to analyze and interpret past traces of human life. The development opens up wider use, not only for research management and publication but also for dissemination and use in other areas such as forensics. In this innovation portfolio, archaeologists co-create new technologies with various technology developers, companies and organizations.
Realization of human rights is an area where there is interest and funding in Europe. This is what Lund University wanted to build on.
- We work to build something exciting together by combining several things: Lund Municipality work to make Lund a so-called city of literature, an organization of Iranian women, Raoul Wallenberg Institute and university journalism training. They have started the work by planning a podcast together. We have also had a workshop to bring new things to birth and will now take the work further.
Realization of human rights: What are the opportunities to develop new types of leadership and ways of organizing ourselves to defend and strengthen human rights and freedom of expression? What role can cities play when nations fail? What can we learn from today's global movements? And what do writers and journalists see as the major threats and opportunities to free speech in the coming years? These are issues explored between scholars (in journalism, human rights, ethics, organization), society, and human rights organizations.
Storkriket Biosphere Reserve has its own power and is operated by three the three municipalities Lund, Eslöv and Sjöbo. Lund University is also an important part of the work through involved researchers. The group is behind an application to UNESCO on being designated a biosphere reserve, but pending the application to be considered, work has already begun. The portfolio is about a green transformation of society with cultural heritage and gender equality as a starting point.
The Great Cricket: The Biosphere Candidacy Stor— an opportunity for existential place-making. There are currently 738 UNESCO biospheres in 134 countries around the world. Seven of them are located in Sweden, and if Stor, within the municipalities of Lund, Sjöbo and Eslöv, there may be eight candidates. The Great Cricket is unique in the way it has integrated the cultural dimension into the candidacy. The StorBiosphere Reserve means the development of an innovation ecosystem and an innovation portfolio where cultural entrepreneurship in collaboration between higher education institutions, companies, society, artists and entrepreneurs can give birth to new initiatives and development projects.
Portfolio Fashion & Textile Transformation This is partly the result of new EU legislation.
- When we told us that Lund University would be involved in applying for the European venture for a KIC within KKN, both textile and fashion-based companies got in touch. I also discovered that Future by Lund was interested in working with the transformation of the area. Lund's strength is not that we are a textile city or that we have a very large investment in fashion science, but we have a lot to offer in terms of opportunities to work with, for example, industrial transformation, circularity and sustainability. We have formed the Fashion @LU network at the university and it includes about 100 researchers who think that textile transformation and fashion are relevant for them. This is a very exciting cross-cutting field where we use all nine faculties in a portfolio ranging from materials knowledge, chemistry, climate to fashion science, circular business models, e-commerce and logistics.
Fashion & Textile Transformation: The EU Textiles Strategy of 2022 will have a huge impact on the current model of textile production. The strategy aims, among other things, to force the industry to adapt and find new and sustainable business models and value chains. This could mean, for example, that in a few years all clothes will receive a product passport that provides digital information about the products. With students from Lund University and partners from industry, they explore what this could mean. This is one example of many of how this innovation portfolio orchestrates various collaborations to contribute to this important industry turnaround.
Portfolio Personalized digital concerts (Personalised digital concerts) was born out of an initiative outside universities.
- The work has now found its way into several faculties, such as the artistic, legal, economic and technical fields that collaborate with Malmö Live and companies such as Axis, Amazon and Sony, among others, in a joint exploration and creation.
Personalized digital concerts: The vision of the Innovation Portfolio is to make it possible to stream live events where the “digital” audience has control over who and what to zoom in on, not only in terms of image but also in terms of sound. The portfolio brings together concert halls such as Malmö Live, companies such as Axis, Amazon and Sony, as well as several faculties at Lund University such as artistic, legal, economic and technical, in a joint exploration and creation.
The sixth portfolio in Cultural and Creative Sectors and Industries (KKSN) deals with Existential sustainability, It was created by Lund University.
Existential sustainability (Existential recillians):
Humans have an inherent power to find meaning in life. Today, when crises threaten the foundations of our society, our inner power to create and feel meaningfulness in life is more important than ever. Organised in the collaborative initiative Existential Resilience by Lund University, the Innovation Portfolio brings together 17 partners to explore meaning-making through contemplation, aesthetics and compassion. The aim is to integrate these into education for mainly relationship-intensive professions, such as nurses, doctors, teachers, police officers and so on.

Portfolios make us viable for collaborations
Future by Lund has chosen to use portfolios to create movement or transformation of an area, broader than individual organizations, individuals, or projects. One advantage of portfolios is that the aim is not to produce a single innovation but to nurture a palette of innovations and contribute to a transition. Then how are these portfolios created? Vous pouvez également de changements dans la régime, nouvelle opportuniques technologiques, ou la desire to solve a societal challenge. Here, Charlotte Lorentz Hjorth talks about the portfolios in the area of Creatives & Changemakers.
