“A great willingness to work together and make a difference”

Forty participants from all over Europe gathered in Lund to launch ekip, a major policy project for the development of innovation ecosystems in the cultural and creative industries. The work involves working together to develop policy recommendations for innovation that will enable the cultural and creative industries to help Europe achieve a digital, sustainable and green transition. “After the initial days, I am filled with optimism,” says Katarina Scott.

European Commission has commissioned Lund University together with partners to develop policy recommendations to promote innovation in the cultural and creative industries through the project team (European Culture and Creativity Innovation Policy Platform). One reason why the EU wants to develop policy recommendations to promote innovation in the cultural and creative industries is that these industries have crucial competences to cope with the green and digital transition.

At the beginning of June, work on the new European Innovation Policy Platform started with participants from large parts of Europe gathering in Lund. Participants come from Denmark, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Finland, Italy, Sweden, Slovakia, Estonia, Greece, Belgium, France and Serbia. Representatives of the European Commission were also present at the kick-off meeting, which was held at Kulturen in Lund and Kødbyen in Copenhagen.

Future by Lund is an affiliate partner of Lund University. Lund will contribute, among other things, through the LIEPT model that Future by Lund and Lund University have developed together, and Charlotte Lorentz Hjorth at Lund University is the project leader. Katarina Scott at Future by Lund was one of the hosts of ekips kick off.

- In teamwork, it is about being able to share, be transparent and to work together, not only with everyone in the project but also with others, says Katarina Scott. Participants represent not only their organization, but also networks or cities, and need to be prepared to bring more people into the collaboration. During the initial days, the participants in the team showed both a great breadth of knowledge and an incredible willingness to collaborate and make a difference.

ekip will collect data on policy areas from actors, industry networks, cities and using AI. The project will select five per year to be processed through ekip's policy engine. The policy recommendations developed will also be tested in different innovation ecosystems in Europe and parallel recommendations on how they can be implemented will also be developed.

- Policies are important for us to meet major challenges such as European attractiveness, climate, inclusion and a good life for all, continues Katarina Scott. But if we are all going to want to use policies, we need to feel inclusive, that it concerns us. Therefore, greater usability and understanding of why we are doing this is important. When we can draw lines from big events down to the practical, it becomes very powerful. If we can bring the motley Europe together, we will become a powerful force to be reckoned with. That we can manage to be both equal and different is our strength and we believe in doing so with open innovation and ecosystems.

What was your most important task during the project's kick-off?

- Our focus during the start of the project was to ensure that we all got to know each other properly in order to gain an understanding of the different competencies that exist. This is not a project in which the House does its job, but we work as an engine where we hand over and share supplies with each other. During the start of the project, we delivered content for what we are going to do in the first steps and at the same time trained cooperation.

Do you think it was a successful start for the team?

- After the initial days, I am filled with optimism and feel confident that as we work with our different formats, they will be filled both in depth and in breadth. We did a joint effort during the day where people immediately delivered results and materials at the absolute top level. I am humbled, touched and happy to be part of this!
